Math 10 help: Collecting Like terms? (Easy questions, I just forgot how to do it)

1. w + 4 - (- w) - 8 - (- 10)

2. 12 + 4n - (- 6k) - 6 + 8n + (- 6k) - 12n

3. -17a - 20 + 3b + 13 + 24a - 11 - 18b - 6 + 9b

1. w + 4 - (- w) - 8 - (- 10)
=w+4+w-8+10
=w+w+4-8+10
=2w+6


2. 12 + 4n - (- 6k) - 6 + 8n + (- 6k) - 12n
=12+4n+6k-6+8n-6k-12n
=12-6+4n+8n-12n+6k-6k
=6+0n+0k
or simply
=6
3. -17a - 20 + 3b + 13 + 24a - 11 - 18b - 6 + 9b
=-17a+24a+3b-18b+9b-20+13-11-6
=7a-6b-24

Collec them, like w + w's, number plus numbers

so

1. 2w +6
w -(-w) (which makes it positive) = 2w. +2 (4-8+10

2. 0n (don't need to write this) +6 -0k (also don't write these if there are none
so it is technically 6. (4+8-12, 12-6, and 6k-6k

3. 7a (-17+24, or if you want it easier, its like 24-17) (-18B-9B=-27B, +3B =-24B) so it's -24B, -37 (-20-11-6)
So then it's 7a - 24B - 37

Reorder the terms:
4 + -8 + 10 + w + 1w

Combine like terms: 4 + -8 = -4
-4 + 10 + w + 1w

Combine like terms: -4 + 10 = 6
6 + w + 1w

Combine like terms: w + 1w = 2w
6 + 2w

2.Simplifying
12 + 4n + -1(-6k) + -6 + 8n + (-6k) + -12n

Remove parenthesis around (-6k)
12 + 4n + -1 * -6k + -6 + 8n + (-6k) + -12n

Multiply -1 * -6
12 + 4n + 6k + -6 + 8n + (-6k) + -12n

Reorder the terms:
12 + -6 + 6k + (-6k) + 4n + 8n + -12n

Combine like terms: 12 + -6 = 6
6 + 6k + (-6k) + 4n + 8n + -12n

Combine like terms: 6k + (-6k) = 0
