IMHO, I believe the expression will be:

p + 0.4 – (p + 0.4)⁵

Reason?

"A sum ( ie p + 0.4 ) is decreased by the fifth power of the same number (ie the SUM)"

I'll explain it so you're not just getting the answer. Use this for your own understanding or not. So take it in parts to figure out the sections.

Part one: SUM (so the addition of) of a number 'p' and 0.4 --> p + 0.4
Part two: the fifth power of the same number --> the number p raised to the 5th power --> p^5
Part three: DECREASED (so the subtraction of) --> part one minus part two

Which brings you to:

(p + 0.4) - p^5

P.S. Part two is my understanding of it. But there is a chance that the person that answered before me is also correct.
