How do you set up and solve this do you use a calculator?

1)

Download graph 4.4 from www.padowan.dk for free.

On "Function I Insert function", type 4*x- 2, then "OK".

On "Function I Insert function", type 2.5*x^2 + 3, choose another color, then "OK".

You'll see that f(x) and g(x) are parallel!

2)

4*x - 2 = 2.5*x^2 + 3

2.5*x^2 - 4*x + 5 = 0

x1 = 0.8 - 1.166190379*i, x2 = 0.8 + 1.166190379*i (complex solutions)

just write down functions in one equality.
4x-2=5x^2/2+3

5x^2-8x+10=0

ax^2+bx+c=0
Δ=b^2-4*a*c

Δ=64-4*5-*10

Δ=-136 Δ<0 so there are complex solutions

x1=(-b+sqrt(Δ))/2a and x2=(-b-sqrt(Δ))/2a

x1=8+sqrt(-136)/10 0,8+sqrt(34)*0,2i and x2=0,8-sqrt(34)*0,2i

i don't use a calcutor to do this calculations

but if you need aprox. values you need a calcutor
sqrt(34)*0,2=~1,2

x1=0,8+1,2i x2=0,8-1,2i
