Algebra 1 Hw Help Please!!!

I really need help on these 2 questions if you can explain how then thanks so much!!

1: The Wards decided to use carpet tiles in the family room. The room has an area of 176 square feet and is 5 feet longer that it is wide. Find the dimensions of the family room.

2: Giselle is going to frame a portrait of the family and place it on the mantle in the family. The portrait is 10 inches longer than it is tall and will take up a total area of 1344 square inches once it is inside the 2 inch thick frame. Find the dimensions and area of the unframed portrait

1) what we know
rectangular
area of 176 square feet
one length is 5 feet longer than the other

if we consider one length as x and the other as (x +5) then we can say that x(x+5) = 176
which means x^2 + 5x - 176 = 0 then trinomial!!!!!
roots are 11 and - 16
YOU CANNOT HAVE A -ve LENGTH THEREFORE THE VALUE OF X is 11

so one length is 11 and the other is 16

2) same thing

what we know
- portraits lengths are x and x + 10

x(x+10) = 1344
x^2 + 10x - 1344 = 0

TRINOMIAL

roots are
32 and - 42
NO -ve LENGTHS SO 32 is the answer

= 32 * 42
-2 from both sides

voila 30 and 40 are your dimensions
