4n^2+4n=-24
n^2 + n = -6
n^2 + n + 1/4 = 1/4 - 6 = -19/4
(n+1/2)^2 = -19/4
n + 1/2 = +/-sqrt(-19/4)
n = -1/2 - i*sqrt(19)/2 =
n = [-1 - isqrt19]/2
n = [-1 + isqrt19]/2

Are you sure this isn't 4n^2 +4n = 24 ?
then you'd have n^2 +n -6 =0
(n-3)(n+2) = 0
n = 3, -2

-1x^2-7x-10=0
x^2 +7x + 10 = 0
(x+5)(x+2) = 0
x = -5
x = 2
