How do I simplify this problem

and the bottom being in parenthese.--5 squared is -5 * -5, which is positive 25. So 5+25 = 30 and that over -5 is -6.......
I'm reviewing for a final exam, and one of the questions on my review goes like this:

Simplify.

5+(-5)^2
-------------
6-11

Now, my review is computer based, and through answering the question wrong three times, it showed me the correct answer, which is -6. The answer I put in was -20 (over) -5.

Anyhow, I've looked in my notes, but I can't find the way to solve it. Can anyone help me out?

-
Let's do the top :
5+(-5)^2 = 5+25 ( -5 x -5 = 25 ) =30

Let's do the bottom:
6-11= -5
So the answer is 30/-5 or -6.

-
Watch :

5 + (25)
_______
-5

30/-5 = -6.

you have to do the exponents first, then simplify the top, simplify the bottom, and divide.

PEMDAS
parenthese, exponents, multiply, divide, add, subtract.
think of the top being in parenthese, and the bottom being in parenthese.

-5 squared is -5 * -5, which is positive 25. So 5+25 = 30 and that over -5 is -6.

-
5+(-5)^2
-------------
6-11

= ( 5 + 25) / -5

= 30 / -5

= -6
