What is -2 to the 4 square plus (-4) to the second square

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 13-03-03] [Hit: ]
according to PEMDAS, equivalent to -(2^4) = -16.Their sum,16 + 16 = 32,Problem?Dont believe everything you read.......
HELP! i have a math test and i though it was 32 but apparently is 0

I'm not sure I know what you mean by "to the 4 square"
The term square refers to a specific power, and none other:
x squared = x² or x^2
x cubed = x³ or x^3
x to the fourth = x⁴ or x^4

−2⁴ = −2*2*2*2 = −16
(−4)² = (−4)*(−4) = 16

−2⁴ + (−4)² = −16 + 16 = 0

I'm assuming that "-2 to the 4 square" means -2 to the 4th power and "(-4) to the second square" means (-4)^2

The first expression -2^4 (without parentheses) is, according to PEMDAS, equivalent to -(2^4) = -16.
The second expression with the parentheses is (-4)^2 = 16
Their sum, -16+16 = 0

-
(-2)(-2)(-2)(-2) = 16
(-4)(-4) = 16
16 + 16 = 32, apparently
Problem?
Don't believe everything you read.

[Keep in mind that -2^2 is NOT EQUAL TO (-2)^2 because -2^2= -4 while (-2)^2=4]
-2^4+(-4)^2
=-16+16
=0
