The incidence of adverse events with benzodiazepines in the neonatal period is significant. They include seizures, respiratory depression often requiring ventilation and low blood pressure. Plus, the infants experience benzodiazepine withdrawal when the meds are being terminated. Barbiturates have their own set of problems, but seem to be more manageable.
