Well, no. Having zoos is, unfortunately, the only way that some people will be able see and care about wild animals at all.
o It would be nice if some of the enclosures were larger, though.
o There are some animals that shouldn't be kept in cages. Their enclosures should be more interesting and varied, so that the animals in them don't get bored... and the people should be as hidden from view as possible via a permanent equivalent of, say, duck blinds.
o Animals that live in family groups in the wild should have family around them. E.g. the way elephants have been kept at zoos is, for the most part, unnatural.

Cal King say: Just the opposite. For the sake of animals, zoos should be supported. In many cases, zoos are the only places where some species are still found because they have become extinct in the wild. Zoos in fact can help reintroduce some species back to the wild in the future. The California condor in fact is an example. It was on the verge of extinction when all the animals were captured and a breeding program was initiated in zoos around the country. Now there are enough of the captive bred individuals that they have been reintroduced into the wild. Some people are dogmatically opposed to the keeping of animals in captivity, but their believes often have little scientific support. They interpret the evidence in such a way that all animals supposedly suffer when they are kept in captivity. That is simply unscientific.

Besides conservation, zoos also educate the public. If someone tells you an animal called thingy critter is endangered, you may not know anything about it and you may not care. But if the public can see how adorable it is in a zoo, then they may donate money to help save it.
