Red/white light torch

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-06-08] [Hit: ]
Im handy with a soldering iron... I think any commercially made models you find will cost much more than if you simply located some red plastic and made one of your own from a regular flashlight.-Just buy a rear lamp for a bicycle. Get one with white LEDs and a red snap-on cover.......
Where can I buy a red/white light torch (a good one)
How much do they cost ?

I made my own a number of years back. I located some transparent red plastic sheets at an art supply store and simply cut out a round piece to fit into a regular flashlight. It took three layers to be dark enough to suit me. Or, you could buy a regular LED flashlight and replace the white LED's with red LED's. I bought a cheapie 3 LED model a few months ago at the local $1 store and replaced the 3 white LED's with red ones I picked up at an electronics parts place. Total cost out of pocket, under $3. But then, I'm handy with a soldering iron... Just buy a rear lamp for a bicycle. Get one with white LEDs and a red snap-on cover.
Take the cover off for a white light torch.
Cheap in supermarkets and sell-everything stores for £1.99 ($2.99) upwards or even cheaper in £1 shops.
Expensive ones from bicycle shops that do exactly the same cost from around £6 ($9)
Packs of two in red and white but otherwise identical for back and front lights are common as well and then you don't have to bother with taking the covers off.
Almost all of them use 2 AAA batteries and last ages with them.
I use then for astro, cycling, and lighting a lightweight tent for camping trips. Never any problems even with the cheap ones.
If you buy the type with a clip at the back you can peg to clothing or to a line inside the roof of a tent easily.

If you already have a torch you can make a red cover for it easily from a bit of red clear plastic bottle. Tizer and a few other drinks come in clear red bottles.
Cut a piece out of the bottle to fit the end of the torch and make a slip-on holder for it.
A bit of thin cardboard and some tape, a pair of scissors and around two minutes total working time will get you a good one.
