First thing we need to do is make our population optimal for our environment. The earth is a finite area with finite resources. The human population grows at a perpetually accelerated rate. Think of it as a life raft situation. We have a raft than can only hold so many people, and we got a growing number of people getting in the raft. If we keep adding people to that life raft it does not matter how well built that raft is it will sink. Over population is not a serious problem yet, but it could be in the future.
Second thing we need to do after we accomplish that goal is to increase our technology as much as we can. The sun is slowly getting hotter, and 500 million years from now the earth will be uninhabitable. We will need to take our space ships to colonize Mars.
Third thing we will need to do eventually after the sun starts getting to hot for Mars is move even further out. Perhaps to one of the moons around a gas giant.
When those gas giant moons become uninhabitable as well we will be desperate to find a new home world. Perhaps a Kuiper belt object will have a good atmosphere by then. If not then we will need to move to another star.
Billions of years from now eventually all stars like the sun will begin to fade out. We will need to find life around a very long living star such as a red dwarf.
By the time red dwarfs fade out we will need to have gathered enough energy to create a worm hole to another universe that is inhabitable which is far beyond the Sci-Fi technology of Star Trek, or Star Wars.
Humans will not always look like humans. We are still evolving like all other life on the planet. Who knows what people will look like that far in the future.
Perhaps humans won't survive, but some of machine we create will survive, and carry lift to new worlds. We are not the masters of the universe. We likely won't survive to the second thing I mentioned, but there is always hope for the future.
