What do we learn that we might not otherwise know?

That money was spent right here in the US, directly employing thousands of people and indirectly employing millions. It's not like we took it to Mars and left it there. Even if we hadn't learned anything, it was stimulating the economy and employing people. Fortunately, we also learned a lot in the process.

Well, if it found the way to get to Mars, I suppose the price was reasonable.
And most of the money spent went to USA industries and the employees who then spent their salaries at many places in this country (hopefully). And Walmart got the balance of that spending, sending most of the money to China (of course).

Good lord, is that all! Chump change.

$266 million dollars just about pays for one medium tech fighter jet. Which do you think would be more of a benefit to society?
