It is one of those things that parents would say to small children.
"What is the moon made of mommy?"
"The moon is made of green cheese, child."
You would say something like this to entertain the child, who is not grown enough to understand that the moon is a huge hunk of rock miles across. To a little child, such an explanation is meaningless anyway, so mommy would tell the kid an entertaining story to satisfy his curiosity and get him to drop the question.
I don't think anyone ever seriously believed that.
some people believed it right up to the day Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moons surface.
