How come astronomers can look at the sun through telescopes but can't look at the sun directly

The telescope makes a picture on a computer screen.A filter is just a scientific sort of sunglasses.-All solar telescopes use filters that reduce the intensity of the light greatly, and also usually screen out all but one selected color.Filters are just materials that let some light pass through but block other light. Sunglasses are a simple kind of filter.......

Here are some common methods for safely looking at the sun -

Failure to do so may result in a condition called "solar retinopathy", where the retina at the back of the eye it quite literally burnt.

With modern professional telescopes, astronomers just look at computer screens. They don't look directly through the telescope themselves. The telescope makes a picture on a computer screen.

A "filter" is just a scientific sort of sunglasses.

There are specially designed (somewhat expensive) telescopes specifically meant for solar-observation. There are also filters that can be used for safe observation. Professional astronomers *do* (normally) take proper safety precautions when observing.

-
Astronomers rarely look through their telescopes because objects they are studying are either very faint, too bright (like the sun), or observed at wavelengths we can't see. Most of the data is computerized and analyzed before being interpreted.

-
Special filters on * any * telescope can stop the ultraviolet radiation from the sun reaching an observer's eyes. The UV is what's so dangerous.

Like the previous answered stated, we are far removed from the time when professional astronomers actually peered into an eyepiece to do science.

You can get a filter for your telescope.
