John W is wrong. The days of amateurs discovering asteroids and comets is way in the past. It;s all high tech now. And anything large enough to be really threatening to life on Earth will be known about months to years in advance.
NASA would not keep things secret, because there would come a point at which amateurs would detect a "secret" killer asteroid perhaps weeks or months in advance.
People get some idiot ideas - mainly because they no b all about space and astronomy, which is odd since we live in the space age.

NASA probably wouldn't have much of a choice, most asteroids are found by amateur astronomers which isn't surprising given how small of a budget there is to finding asteroids. The choice of whether or not to panic the people really isn't theirs either, it's the governments. Also, they probably won't know for sure if it's going to hit till days before if not minutes before and then they won't have a very good estimate of where it will hit. Walgreens wouldn't believe the NASA rep that told them, Walgreens would just think that rep was trying to get pain killers or something.
