Don't worry, I'm not one of the end of the world nutters.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows more about where this rumor has come from.

I suspect it started with something that was said about solar flares possibly knocking out communication for a bit, and maybe having an effect on power.
And people have misunderstood, and misrepeated it to be more about a power blackout
Which, in turn, has been misrepeated as a blackout, meaning that there would be no sunlight.

The internet is the worst game of chinese whispers.

Thoughts?

I've been wondering about this myself. There must have been some specific article online, because these questions about the three-day blackout started appearing in large numbers very suddenly, when this had not been part of the "2012" hoax previously. It's interesting that when you do a Google search on "three days darkness" you get a lot of stuff about some old Catholic prophesy, rather than anything about NASA or 2012.

[Edit] I tried adding "NASA" to my search, and came up with this useful information:

The other new emphasis in the "2012" nonsense is on the "photon belt" which has already morphed into a "photonic belt." Chinese whispers, indeed.

Grow up in Greater New Orleans. Not seeing the Sun during September except for brief moments is NORMAL because of overcast skies. The Earth keeps rotating so the Sun will rise and set just like normal, but you may not be able to sse it because of local or regional weather conditions for three days or more.

Paranoid people can confabulate anything to explain things they are afraid of because they are ignorant and paranoid. That is what is called an anxiety loop or a panic attack.

"...A survey of conspiracy theories in American public life shows that these tend to come disproportionately from two broad groups of people: the politically disaffected and the culturally suspicious.
