My biology teacher said that chromatids are the two ones that are attached and chromosomes are the ones that are by themselves.

Chromatid(s) make up chromosomes. At the beginning of interpahse you have 1 chromosome which is equal to one chromatid. Right before mitosis you now have 1 chromosome with 2 chromatids also known as sister chromatids.
