Which one is a synthesis reaction and why

Adding water to break down a macromolecule is called hydrolysis.Good luck!......
1)protein+water-> amino acid
2) glucose + glucose -> maltose +water

Why?

Because glucoses are monomers, they are building blocks of carbohydrates (macromolecules). In order to bond two building blocks together (any building blocks) a dehydration synthesis or condensation reaction (same thing) MUST take place. This reaction produces water!

The first choice ADDS WATER to a protein (the macromolecule, just like how carbohydrate is a macromolecule) and breaks it down into its building block, an amino acid. Adding water to break down a macromolecule is called hydrolysis.

Good luck! I hope I helped :D
