How does a species gain something new from evolution?

Once in a while, we can find some evidence from the fossil record. We have fossil bones tracing the development of horse ancestors from Eohippus (dawn horse) which was about the size of an average dog, through larger and larger fossil specimens with increasingly typical features of modern horses, to the horses of today. How does a species gain something new from evolution?
For example a new organ? Does it happen gradually while the rest of the body is evolving too or does it evolve on its own until it becomes useful to the species?

marys.momma say: Natural selection of potentially useful characteristics, plus random mutation from radiation sources or other outside influences.

Our human lifespan is just an eyeblink in the long history of the earth. Once in a while, we can find some evidence from the fossil record. We have fossil bones tracing the development of horse ancestors from Eohippus ("dawn horse") which was about the size of an average dog, through larger and larger fossil specimens with increasingly typical features of modern horses, to the horses of today.

Some species of plants and animals haven't changed in millions of years – gingko trees and some sharks for example. Evidently there was little pressure for change – they were very well suited to their environment as it was.

Time is the fourth dimension. It seems reasonable that offspring might differ slightly from their parents, and prove to be stronger, better adapted to their surroundings, or just plain luckier than others. It makes me wonder what useful new characteristics might have been lost over the millennia, simply from misfortune. Certainly whole classes of plant and animal life have gone extinct for various reasons.

MARK say: I second what Bulldog Drummond said: a good answer from John. Unfortunately we also have some answers from the liars for Jesus. It is crystal clear they understand nothing about evolution. So, let show themselves up for their incredible ignorance.

Candice say: Evolutionists believe that we came out of the sea as fish, but we had to grow legs first. It's been explained by evolutionists like, supposedly every few million years one & only one organ or whatever supposedly evolves. So we'd have to wait for the stomach, eyes, both legs, both arms, spine, since we were supposedly in the sea we'd have to get organs & lose the gill's because we would die, we would have to evolve teeth, spine, tongue, etc.
