The hydration number of salt is not always an integer, although that's what we usually see. Here's a paper indicating fractional hydration numbers: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/art…
But the hydration number can't simply be any old number. The hydration number will come from a ratio of small whole numbers like 1:4, 1:5 1:6, 2:3, 2:5, etc.
The hydration number is usually quite easy to determine by simply evaporating of the water while getting the mass before and after.
It would see that none of these are true.
