5s, 4d, 5p, 6s, 4f, 5d,......
1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s, 3d, 4p, 5s, 4d, 5p, 6s, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s, 5f, 6d, 7p, (8s, 5g, 6f, 7d, 8p, and 9s

What does all of that mean? need a lot of explanation because this is complicated.

It's the electron configuration chart.

1-8 determines the energy level of the atom and the s p d and f are the orbits that they are located in. Each orbit will have a certain number of electrons in it as well.

S orbit can only hold a max of 2
P orbit can only hold a max of 6
D orbit can only hold a max of 10
F orbit can only hold a max of 14

The number of electrons is determined by the atomic number of your atom. For example, Ca

1s^2
2s^2 2p^6
3s^2 3p^6
4s^2

When you use that chart write it like I have and when you start going through those levels you have to go diagonal thru them because you'll eventually get to the d orbit which lags one behind.
