The internal energy of a system increases by 400 J while 700 J of work are performed on it. What was the magnitude of the heat flow out of the system?

-
according to the first law of thermodynamics..
Q = U+W
where Q = heat added to the system ( to be calculated)
U = increase in internal energy of the system (here +400 J)
W = work done by the system (here -700 J as work is being done on the system)

just put values, we get Q = -300 J (heat added to the system)
so heat flown out of the system = -(-300) J = 300 J

hope it helps
