I was planning on building a soon and realize that I need a stronger understanding of capacitors. I know how they work and all and know some of their applications in electronics. My question was regarding their discharge characteristics when wired in series or parallel (in terms of amps and volts). I was also curious to know what the characteristics would be if I charged the capacitors in parallel but discharged them in series or vice-versa via relays. I know the load plays a role but at the moment I haven't really thought of any numbers for the rail gun. Any thoughts? Easy 10 pts

What is a "soon" ?

Their discharge is controlled by the load resistance and inductance and the internal resistance and inductance of the capacitors.

How you charge them has nothing to do with how they discharge.

You need to be more specific.

edit "what about discharging them in series or parallel"
depends on the load, again. resistance and inductance, and internal resistance and inductance of the capacitors. IF THE LOAD IS FIXED, then in series you have more voltage and therefore more current and they will discharge faster. In parallel, less voltage and less current and a slower discharge. But the load is not fixed. For this application, you design the driver for the voltage and current you have available.

Without lots more details, all I can tell you is vague generalities like those above.
