Hey guys, I am currently in college and going for a 4 year bachelors degree and up for Electrical Engineering and was wondering if anyone out there has an idea where to get experience. Not the experience as in looking on you tube and learning, im already doing that. I'm talking about actual job experience. Internships are out there but most of them are needed for people who have there last years in university and im not quite there yet. Any ideas? Any suggestions? I would really appreciate it. Thanks guys! =)

I'm no engineer, just a technician but I found that building your own circuitry and creating semi-professinal schematics looked good when brought into an interview. My second to last interview was for a full time position at Solyndra (yep that Solyndra, took place 2 days before bankruptcy). Anyway, I was getting grilled by engineers and lead technicians and they mentioned my schematics and were curious. I had no intention of showing them unless they brought it up since I did not want to look desperate but they seemed to enjoy them and were asking about each component. It isn't in field experience, thats for sure. It does demonstrate your passion for what you do and your depth of knowledge. It is fun to challenge yourself and in the future if you can show that in an interview, it looks good. There are some adult science fair competitions where you can compete for money and bragging rights, anything like that works. You're probably not going to get an internship though, maybe over summer break. I just doubt a company would hire an engineer who is still in school simply because you're going to be VERY busy with an unproven track record. You're better off honing your skills on your own time and coming up with a way to prove it.

Internships are usually the 4 years of supervised, full time employment, after graduation, and before the license is granted.

Co-operative work terms, however, can begin as early as after completion of second semester. This gives you great opportunity to prove your worth and get your foot in the door, with as many as 4 employers. (1 employer per semester, for up to 4 semesters).

If you can't get a job at an industrial place - even sweeping the floor at a TV station - try Radio Shack. You can be their resident electronic genius with one semester of EE.
