I've also seen that, in Titanic, they were in the middle of the ocean when they sent SOS messages through telegraph.

Early telegraph systems such as in the US used a wire suspended on poles, hence the term whispering wires used by the locals at the time. Later land based telegraphy systems and mobile telegraphy systems used radio (wireless) telegraphy, thus dispensing with the need for wires.
