How do communities currently manage wastewater, and how do we reduce the amount of wastewater produced in an eco friendly way? Please no silly answers, thanks so much!

Wastewater is by definition, water that cannot be used for any purpose. Converting that to water that can be used for some purpose is the trick.
Some of the answers are simple: like one chicken processing plant that produced wastewater with chicken scraps in it. A sure candidate for the local sewerage plant to fix. Instead, there was a swamp behind the plant on land the plant owned. Macerating the lumpy waste, they sprayed it into the swamp. Fish and wildlife ate it and the water that flowed out of the swamp was clear. Another chicken plant just pumped their waste water into settling tanks and let the local gater raising farm clean out the settling tanks. Everyone made out.
The most obvious solution is to separate the ground water drains from the sewer mix. It requires that there be two waste lines, but processing the surface drainage after rains is as simple as running it through wiers to separate the oils (like from parking lots) and the other through a sewerage plant.
