If a light switch is turned on and a light is plugged in with no bulb , does it still use energy

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-07-09] [Hit: ]
or if the bulb is burned out, then the power cannot get past that point. to go to ground by following the ground wire to the grounding point. so no energy is used,........
Just curious if a wall switch is on and no bulb in it if it still uses electricity

Hi Robert, The answer to your question is NO. In order for energy to be drained from it's source it needs a place to go, & that place is called "Ground', so, if you remove the bulb, or if the bulb is burned out, then the power cannot get past that point. to go to "ground" by following the ground wire to the grounding point. so no energy is used,.. So Robert, there you have it, in detail,.. I am hoping for a quick "Best Answer" 10 points on this on Thanks Tecopa Jack

Not at in the slightest, think of it this way. When you have a light on and flip the switch it is no longer consuming power. By removing the bulb and flipping the switch on the circuit is still incomplete like having no switch on at all. This is because the light fixture has two poles.

Now imagine those two wires that are touching to be a switch and it essentially is. When they are touching the bulb will light right? So lets say we tie those wires together so the light is always on, then we pick up the bulb. The circuit is now open because the two wires that were connected to the bulb are not touching, thus no power is flowing.

Same with a light in your home, the fixture that you screw a bulb into is just a way for those two wires to make a solid mechanical contact with the two points on the bulb represented on the picture. That and the light wont fall out since it is screwed into place.

Remember if a circuit is open no current is flowing.

No. There is a break in the circuit, just like a break in a light switch when it is off. No current will flow, therefore.

I'm not sure but I think it does. Just like your cell phone charger....if you unplug your phone from the charger and you don't unplug the charger from the wall it still uses energy. Now, you need to be extremely careful about leaving the light switch on. A friend of mine left the light switch on in her closet with no buld and it started a fire. Please be careful!
