Which direction is truly North and South

He posed the question if both the compass and the Earth are magnets, why does the North side of the compass point towards the North Pole (opposites attract when it comes to magnets). He told us that really what we called the North pole was actually the South Pole, and vice versa. So I am just wondering if this is correct.I am not looking for some random person to google this,......
May seem an odd question, but hear me out. In school we were told there are North and South Poles. Also, we heard about magnetic North. One teacher pointed out to us that compass are basically magnets being pulled by Earth's magnetic field. He posed the question if both the compass and the Earth are magnets, why does the North side of the compass point towards the North Pole (opposite's attract when it comes to magnets). He told us that really what we called the North pole was actually the South Pole, and vice versa. So I am just wondering if this is correct.

I am not looking for some random person to google this, I could do that myself, I am asking for someone who knows the answer for sure to let me know, Thanks in advance.

You are exactly right: the Earth's South Pole is the north pole of a magnet, and the Earth's North Pole is the south pole of the magnet. Historically, before magnetism itself was understood, people named the poles of a compass (or other magnet) according to the directions they point: the north pole points north, and the south pole points south. Since like poles repel each other, this means that the Earth's North Pole is not a magnetic north pole.

Really, the problem is that we have overloaded the word "pole" with too many different meanings. If we had a different word for the various geographic poles and the poles of a magnet, there would be less confusion.

So the north end (so-called) of a magnet is attracted to the north pole (so-called) of the Earth. So it seems to me that you are asking which one is truly North, is that right?

It could just as well be argued that the names for the Earth's poles are correct, and the ones we use for magnets are wrong. In fact, the name for the Earth's pole came first. Magnetic compasses didn't get names for their poles until sometime after 850 AD. (Probably after 1150 in Europe.)

That is so not true it only makes sense that NORTH points at the NORTH pole we named it that for a reason
