What is 5 7/8 subtracted by 3 9/10? HELP!!

I really need help! I've been working on the question for an half and hour and I can't get the answer!!!

The best way to do this is find the improper fraction.
47/8. 39/10

Now find the common denominator.
Multiply 5 to the top and bottom of the fraction 47/8 which will be 235/40.
Multiply 4 to the top and bottom of the fraction 39/10 which will be 156/40

Now subtract the numerators and simplify. You should get 79/40. Now put it back into a mixed fraction. You should get 1 39/40


That's the long way. So you get an understanding.

I always like to put mine in improper fraction form. The number 5 7/8 as an improper fraction is 47/8. 3 9/10 as an improper fraction is 39/10.
We have to find the least common denominator for each of them. The lowest number that is both divisible by 8 and 10 is 40. So, we have to do something to change both the numbers to 40ths.

We know 40 divided by 8 is 5, so we need to multiply the top number by 5 to get the 40ths.
47/8 = 235/40

We know 40 divided by ten is four, so we multiply the top number of the other fraction by 4.

39/10 = 156/40

So, now we have (235/40) - (156/40).
Subtract the two numbers now.

235 - 156 = 79
We have 79/40, which is the same as 1 39/40.

5 7/8 - 3 9/10 = 47/8 - 39/10 = 235/40 - 156/40 = 79/40 (or 1 39/40 or 1.975)

5 7/8 - 3 9/10 is 5 35/40 - 3 36/40 then it's 4 75/40 - 3 36/40 = 1 39/40.
