Does anybody know what exactly this is, perhaps it's name numerology

This kid that I sit next to in math asked me to right down my full name (middle name included) on a piece of paper. I did so, and then he wrote the alphabet down the margain of the paper. Then he wrote numbers to correspond with each letter...
A=1
B=2
C=3
Etc.
He took the letters from my name and wrote down their number equivalent, I wasn't quite paying attention to what he did next, but he managed to simplify the numbers down to the number one. He said he has done this plenty of times, and that his name and my name were the only ones that turned out to be a one? He tried it on my friend too, who was a three. It's just got me curious, so anybody know what this is? Thanks for your help!

Yes, it's one form of numerology
you take the numbers that correspond to the letters(1= a, j, s, 2 = b, k, t, etc.)
add up the numbers.
If the number is greater than 10, then you add up the digits (suppose the total was 236, this give 11, which eventually becomes 2)
The you refer to charts, which assign a meaning to the final number (although there are special meanings for 11, 12, 13, 22, 33 and a few others)

The thing to note is that 9 acts like 0 - if you had 10 9's in your name, their total would only be 9 (9+ 9 + 9 = 27 = 9)

First of all you should understand that this sort of thing has no real meaning. Yes it has been in the past used as a kind of fortune telling thing, but not very popular.
