Andrew say: Australia is not part of "South Asia." South Asia is comprised of the Indian Subcontinent and the surrounding areas - India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and The Maldives. Some sources include Afghanistan as well, but most people would consider Afghanistan to be part of Central Asia.

The closest region to Australia would be Southeast Asia, as some of the islands of Indonesia are relatively near to Australia. Technically New Guinea is not part of Southeast Asia either, but because Indonesia annexed the western portion of the island, that section is often lumped with the rest of Indonesia as Southeast Asia.

But Australia is generally considered to be a continent unto itself, and is occasionally categorised as being part of the Oceania region, which would also include New Zealand and some of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia as well as some outlying territories of Japan and the United States.

That being said, the indigenous inhabitants of Australia - the Aborigines, were not culturally or linguistically linked with Southeast Asia. When Europeans began to settle Australia in large numbers, they fashioned a society that resembled that of Britain.

Today Australia is a multi-cultural nation that bears many similarities with other highly developed Western countries, that's why it's often considered a Western nation.
