Can someone please help me with this math problem.....

A baseball team has home games on Wednesday and Saturday. The two games together $5165.00 for the team. Wednesday's game generates $585.00 less than Saturday's game. How much money was taken at each game.

Let X = the money from Wednesday's game,and Y = the money from Saturday's game

We know X + Y = $5165.00
We also know from the statement about Wednesday's game generating $585 less than Saturday's game that: Y - X = $585 (or we could write this as X - Y = -$585)

We can re-write Y - X = $585 to solve for one of the variables. Let us pick solving for Y, although it doesn't matter which one we pick.

Y = $585 + X

Now, we can replace Y in our original equation with this value of Y and we get
X + $585 + X = $5165.00
2X + $585 = $5165.00
2X = $4580
X = $4580/2 = $2290

Now we have X, we can take this value and substitute it into the original equation to solve for Y.
$2290 + Y = $5165
Y = $5165 - $2290 = $2875
