Summer assignments and omgomg it's due next week.

IDK how to do this one.

#10 Given f(x) = x^4 - 3x^3 - 2x^2 - 7x - 10
Find all roots to the nearest 0.001

#11 Given f(x) = 4sin(x) - 5x + 2
Find all roots the nearest 0.001

If anyone can also explain how to do it on the graphing calculator, that would be awesome. Thanks. :)

Hi,
I'll show you how to do some of this on a TI-83 Plus, but finding the imaginary roots of the residual quadratic is more than I want to get into.

For the first problem do the following:
1. Press Y=, enter the equation and press GRAPH.
2. After the graph appears, press 2nd, CALC, 2 (for zero).
3. Move the cursor on the curve slightly above the x-axis and press ENTER. Move the cursor slightly below the x-axis and press ENTER.
4. Move the cursor one click and press ENTER. You will get -1.059528.

For the second root do the same type thing except start with the cursor below the x-axis rather than above. You should get 4.0646521 as an answer.
Unfortunately, you're now stuck with a complex equation that the TI-83 Plus can't handle, and the synthetic division is very tedious. You may need to do use approximations. It's fairly close to radical (2.35)i.

As for problem 2, it's fairly straight forward to solve on the TI-83 Plus.

1. Press Y=, enter the equation and press GRAPH.
2. After the graph appears, press 2nd, CALC, 2 (for zero).
3. Move the cursor slightly above the x-axis and press ENTER. Move the cursor slightly below the x-axis and press ENTER.
4. Move the cursor one click and press ENTER. You will get 1.1201....
Hope this helps some.

All depends on your calculator (they're all different), either post your calculator model or google "Find roots *calc model*"

A great resource that'll help here is wolfram alpha.
