To answer your question, the grammar of math is not standardized on this matter. You're both right depending on which reliable source you reference. The important thing is that you settle on one so you can communicate with one another. Given your relationship with him, I suggest that you learn the grammar which he's familiar with, or just craft your equations such that the order actually doesn't matter.

My personal experience is that in school I was taught the grammer that you were taught. (x before / and + before -).

Since then, however, I've learned tens of programming languages which _all_ use your professor's grammar, so I've been retrained and now use his convention.

In the order of operations which ver comes first multiplication or division is the one you do first... So they are right in a way it doesn't matter which ( mult or div) you do first as long as they are done before the adding and subtracting

-
After clearing parentheses and exponents, do multiplications and divisions in order from left to right.

ex. 10/2 + 3*5=5+15=20

Then do all additions and subtractions in order from left to right.

ex. 7-2+3=5+3=8

-
Do Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication/Division (Do the left ones first) Addition/Subtraction (Like M/D)

-
It does not matter the order as long as multiplication and division are done before addition and subtraction.

-
First of all It's " BEDMAS"

B-Brackets
E-Exponents
D- Divide
M-Multiplication
A- Addition
S-Subtraction

(:

All of my teachers (about 8 of them by now...) have always told me to do multiplication and division together from left to right and addition and subtraction together from left to right. There was never any specific order within the two pairs of operations. I have never heard of doing multiplication before division or addition before subtraction...but it shouldn't really make a difference either way. :) Good luck in your class!
