How come (-x^5)^2 = x^10

and

(-2x^4)^3 = -8x^12

Perhaps I'm wrong, but shouldn't they both be negative?

-
food for thought

- 1 * - 1 = 1 even number of times multiplied

- 1 * - 1 * - 1 = - 1 odd number of times multiplied
