her band plays once a week and she earns $200 each performance. Her total annual income is 49,696. She wants to ask her boss for a raise, assuming all the other incomes stay the same how much a raise will she need to earn 51,880 annually.

the answer is from one of these

You could spend time working out how much she earns from the band per year, and how much from her investments, and how much per hour from her job, but none of that is necessary for the answer.

The amount of raise she requires per year is
51 880 - 49 696 = 2 184

2184/52 = 42 per week
42/28 = 1.5 per hour

So the answer is $1.50

A lot of the information was in there to confuse you and was not required for the answer!

Put the words into symbols first, then you can figure out the relationships:

"A monthly income of $120 from investments": i = $120 x 12 months = $1440 per year
"...once a week & she earns $200 each performance...": p = $200 x 52 weeks = $10,400 per year
"...works 28 hours a week...": so if her hour wage is w, she earns 28 hours x w x 52 weeks = 1456 times w = $1456w per year
"...total annual income is 49,696" : t = 49,696

Put it all together; there's only one value you don't know, so solve for that. Use a similar approach to answer the rest of the question. E-mail me if you still don't understand.
