I don't understand "Borrowing" with fractions

please and thank you-You need to convert the fractions into improper fractions to solve. When you have a+b/c, that can become an improper fraction by multiplying the whole number by the denominator and adding it to the numerator. You borrow the whole number to turn the mixed numeral into an improper fraction.6/4 can be reduced to 3/2, or (as in my example) 1 1/2.......
3 1/4 – 1 3/4 = ?
how woud it work here? please and thank you

You need to convert the fractions into improper fractions to solve.

When you have a+b/c, that can become an improper fraction by multiplying the whole number by the denominator and adding it to the numerator.
a + b/c = (ac + b)/c

For instance
1 1/2 = (1*2 + 1)/2 = 3/2
You "borrow" the whole number to turn the mixed numeral into an improper fraction.

3 1/4 = (3*4 + 1)/4 = 13/4
1 3/4 = (1*4 + 3)/4 = 7/4

Now you can subtract:
13/4 - 7/4 = 6/4

6/4 can be reduced to 3/2, or (as in my example) 1 1/2.
