I'm doing a word problem for my math class but I can't get the right answer! I need help.
2 towns are 1250 miles apart. A group pf hikers start from each town and walk trail toward eachother. They meet after a total hicking time of 200hrs. If one group travels 1 1/2 mile per hour faster than the group. FInd the rate of each group.
This is what I have tried:
slower group= x * 200 = 200x y * 200 = 200y
200x + 200y = 1250
y=x + 1 1/2
200x+200(x+1 1/2) =1250
200x+200x+300=1250
400x+100=1250

400x=1150
400x/400 = 1150/400
x=2.875 = 2 7/8
y=x+ 1 1/2
y=2.875 + 1 1/2
y=4.375=4 3/8
