Could someone help me with an order of operations issue

for a final answer of 3... is there some caveat to that general order of operations rule that I missed somewhere?-Assuming no parentheses or assumptions,As far as the orders of operations are concerned,......
I'm having trouble figuring out why -(2-8)^2/(-6)*2 equals 12. It simplifies down to -36/(-6)*2, at which point I would have to divide -36 by -6 to get 6, and then multiply that by 2 in order to get 12.... but the order of operations (PEMDAS) lists multiplication before division, in which case I ought to multiply first, which would give me -36/-12, for a final answer of 3... is there some caveat to that general order of operations rule that I missed somewhere?

Assuming no parentheses or assumptions, here we go:
PEMDAS

-(2 - 8)² / (-6) * 2
-(-6)² / (-6) * 2
-36 / (-6) * 2
6 * 2
12

As far as the orders of operations are concerned, I hate how they're taught, the mnemonic in particular. The reason is that multiplication and division are on the same plane and when they're together you work from left to right. The same is true of addition and subtraction. So I prefer to remember it as PE(MD)(AS), grouping the things that are meant to be the same "rank" for lack of a better word.

R Order of operations call for clearing all in parentheses first: -(2-8)=-(-6)^2 / (-6)^2= -36/36=-1. It does not matter vwhethe you do the mulitplicationand division in that order or the division first. The O of Operations just states do any multiplicatons and divisions after clearing the parentheses and exponents. How the answer can be 12 is beyond me. It shouls equal -1.

PEMDAS is really PE(MD)(AS). Multiplication and division both have the same priority, so you just do them in order; don't skip over division to do multiplication first. The same applies to addition and subtraction.

-(2-8)^2/(-6)*2 =
-(-6)^2/(-6) * 2 =
-36/(-6) * 2 =
6 * 2 =
12

-(2 - 8)^2/( (-6) * 2 ) =
-(-6)^2/(-12) =
-36/(-12) =
3

Parentheses make all the difference in the world.
