multiply 7/12 by four
28/48-17/48= 11/48

2.3/4-1/5
3/4 multiply top and bottom by 5, 1/5 by 4
15/20-4/20=11/20

3.5/9-7/18
5/9 multipl by 2 top and bottom
10/18-7/18= 3/18=1/6

4.15/16-5/8
5/8 times 2
15/16-10/16=5/16

5. 7/8-7/32
multiple 7/8 by 4 top and bottom
28/32-7/32=21/32

6. 5/16-1/4
1/4 multiply by 4
5/16-4/16=1/16

The main thing with all of these problems is that you need to get the denometer to be the same for both of the numbers in order to subtract them.

first you need to find the common denominators between the two fractions. for # 1 the common denominator would be 48. so multiply 7/12 x 4/4 to get 28/48. then subtract across the tops to get 28-17 = 11. 11/48 cannot simplify so that's your answer.

number 2 the common denominator is 20 so multiply 3/4 by 5/5 to get 15/20 and then multiply 1/5 by 4/4 to get 4/20. subtract across the tops to get 11/20 which wont simplify so that's your answer.

for number 3 the common denominator is 18. multiply 5/9 by 2/2 to get 10/18. subtract to get 3/18 which simplifies to 1/6.

number 4 the common denominator is 16. multiply 5/8 by 2/2 to get 10/16. subtract 15-10 to get 5/16 which doesnt simplify.

number 5 32 is the common denominator. 7/8 times 4/4 gives you 28/32. 28-7 = 21/32 which cannot be simplified.

number 6 the common denominator is 16. 1/4 times 4/4 gives you 4/16 so you are left with 1/16.
