How to solve/graph this

-8).Then, because slope is (change y)/(change x), you can go up 16 and right 3.Here is a picture of the graph: https://dl.dropbox.......
Equation: 16x-3y=24
Can you explain how to solve this, and then show me how to graph it. I know rise/run, but I don't understand when you have something like 15/2=-5.
My teacher is trying to help us, but everyone is scared to ask for help because she constantly talks about moving us down to PreAp math. (i'm in Algebra 1)

It is easier to graph in slope-intercept form.
16x-3y=24
-3y=24-16x
y=(16/3)x-8
It has a slope of 16/3 and a y-intercept of -8.
You can plot the y-intercept (0,-8). Then, because slope is (change y)/(change x), you can go up 16 and right 3. Here is a picture of the graph: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/23230235/Screen…

Because there are two variables (x and y), you would need another equation to actually solve this.

Also, you should do something about this math teacher. Her job is to confirm that everyone in the class understands the material. You should inform her that her talking about this is not a good idea. if she is mean/stubborn about this, you could go even higher and inform the principal/head of math department.

This is an equation of a line. To graph it you only need two points (any two points!!!). For example, choose your two favorite values for x and find the corresponding y's. Like take x=0 giving y=-8 and x=3 giving y=8. Now draw the line through the points (0,-8) and (3,8) to get the graph. You do not need to worry about the slope or the y-intercept at all!!!!

To solve it you should know for which variable, because there are infinitely many solutions corresponding to points on the line. For example, if you solve for x you get x=3/2+3y/16.

I can understand that you would be confused seeing 15/2=-5 because it is wrong.

Do not be afraid to ask questions because you will also do a favor to everybody else who does not understand. If she says that she would move you down tell her the you are asking questions exactly so that she will not need to move you down!

too easy

16x - 3y = 24

-3y = -16x + 24

y = 16/3x - 8

So the slope is 16/3 and the y intercept -8
