1. factor out a 4 to get 4(x^2-16) then seperate the squares to make a binomial 4[(x+4)(x-4)]

13. x^2 = 49 if you square both sides x = 7

5. a+b = the square root of 36 or 6 and a - b equals the square root of 4 or two so if you take these two equations and add them you get a = 4 and if you sub in for a then b = 2 if you solve the equation you get 40

if (a-b)^2 = 4, a-b = 2

add a+b = 6 and a-b = 2 to get 2a=8; a = 4.

if a = 4, then a+b = 6 means 4+b=6, or b = 2.

a^2+b^2 = 16+4=20
