What does Y stand for in y = mx + b?

-------------------------------------------------------

answers:
David say: Y is the vertical axis on the Cartesian plane.
-
Jeffrey K say: When using this formula, both x and y remain x and y. They don't stand for anything. m is a number, the slope. b is a number, the y intercept.
-
Como say: This is the equation of a straight line.
Gradient is m
Line passes through ( 0 , b ) which is a point on the y axis
-
Vaman say: y stands for f(x).
-
BeeLiz19 say: The whole point/application of slope-intercept equations is to be able to physically see a line. We can draw this line on a graph using points (x, y)...

The equation y = mx+b is a way to solve for the height of any given point when x has a certain value.

so for example, if your equation is y = 2x + 3...

You can plug in different values for x and find the y value that you would therefore get... and therefore get a whole bunch of points that when you plot them out on the graph, shows you a line.
-
goring say: is a skyued linear equation where b is the offset from the axis in the graph. X/Y =m which represents a slope on a roof or a ratio representing velocity.
If y=x the constant is unity= All linear equation cannot exist without a constant
For an equation to have meaning the units of measurement must be the same on both sides of the equation
-
Krishnamurthy say: Y = mx + b is the equation for a straight line.
"B" is the point value of where the line intercepts the y axis, called the y intercept.
-
lenpol7 say: The y-coordinate, for the given x-coordinate.
-
say: y is the y-coordinate for when you put x inside the function.

y = mx + b

at a, y = ma + b

the coordinate would be (a, ma + b)
-
TomV say: y stands for the ordinate or the vertical distance between a point on the line and the horizontal or x axis.
-
Philomel say: The equation of a line can be shown on a graph. Each point is a position on the graph with two coordinates, X and Y. Y is the magnitude of the Y coordinate.
-
derfram say: y will be the dependent variable.
-
khalil say: y obeys x
x = 0 → y = b
