Is it safe to look at a total solar eclipse, the part when the corona becomes visible?

and welding goggles may not be enough.Get real eclipse filters. The problem is that the evolved mechanism that produces pain when you look at the Sun and thereby prevents you from damaging your eyes does not work during a partial eclipse, because the pain mechanism depends on the brightness of the whole Sun, whereas a small piece of the Sun has sufficient surface brightness to damage your eyes, but is not bright enough to trigger the pain mechanism.......

I plan on getting welding goggles

answers:
cosmo say: It's safe to look at an eclipse if none of the photosphere is visible.

Even a small part of the photosphere can damage your eyes, however, and welding goggles may not be enough. Get real eclipse filters.

The problem is that the evolved mechanism that produces pain when you look at the Sun and thereby prevents you from damaging your eyes does not work during a partial eclipse, because the pain mechanism depends on the brightness of the whole Sun, whereas a small piece of the Sun has sufficient surface brightness to damage your eyes, but is not bright enough to trigger the pain mechanism. This is true ONLY during partial eclipses of the Sun, and these are rare enough that evolution has not developed a defense mechanism.

tham153 say: I have seen half a dozen total solar eclipses, from Maine to Irkutsk. They are perfectly safe to look at, as a 2160 mile diameter rock block the body of the Sun, and the solar corona is not particularly bright--I've seen a few first magnitude stars and a couple planets during totality. However, welding goggles are very much necessary during partial phases, as then the exposed part of the Sun is bright enough to cause eye damage.

Newdivide1701 say: If you are planning to wear those goggles, then yes.

Michael say: YES. Mike

Starrysky say: During the total phase (no surface of the sun, just corona) it is fine to look without protection. The corona is over a million times fainter than the surface. Before and after that time, you should use suitable protection. Welder goggles may not be enough. See solar filter glasses that are on sale now.

D g say: why would you want to ..look at a reflection or take a video image of it ... this will NOT HURT YOUR EYES

Choose a bloody best answer. It's not hard. say: For direct viewing you need eclipse glasses. The disposable ones will be fine. Buy a few pairs and give them to friends.

kilroymaster say: First off you could be blinded for life by not using a special device to view a solar eclipse.........................

Ronald 7 say: Gas weldng Goggles are far too weak for that job.
A full Face Arc Welding Helmet is a lot better.
