Why is it so difficult to master, and why are they so complicated?
Should not equations like this be simple and "elegant"?

They are incredibly elegant in modern vector notation. When originally published they were in a much untidier and long-winded format. They capture a huge range of phenomena and have tremendous symmetry, all in a few symbols.
