What shape do you get if you connect the opposite ends of a negatively shaped 2 dimensional object

Say a saddle, and it's not infinitely large.

Would you get a different shape if you only connect the two opposite ends verses connecting all 4 opposite ends?

If you connect two ends I think you get a cylinder, and if you connect all four ends you get a torus. But I'm not 100% sure on this!
