Is Gravitational Potential Energy and Potential Energy the same thing

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-06-06] [Hit: ]
of what I have always considered, sloppy writing. Whenever you see the word potential, it should be followed by the word energy. But, most authors dont bother.......
well this is probably a stupid question :$ but is there any difference between gravitational potential energy and potential energy. i am not sure :)

thank you! any answer is appreciated

Gravitational potential energy is a kind of potential energy. You can also have electric potential energy.

I sympathize with your confusion. This is just one example, of what I have always considered, sloppy writing. Whenever you see the word potential, it should be followed by the word energy. But, most authors don't bother. It is just assumed that potential means potential energy.
So, to answer your question, yes, they are exactly the same thing. But keep in mind that there are other kinds of potential, such as electrical potential energy.

I believe gravitational potential energy is (I believe) the energy stored or created in an object because of its position within a gravitational field. If you are carrying something its gravitational potential energy is stored until you let go of it and it falls due to gravity.Potential energy is that energy that does not require an external gravitational field to release it . A wound watch spring, stretched elastic band. both require energy to wind stretch and then release it afterwards without the need for any gravitational effect
