So what exactly caused the heatwave

the suns net radiation. It is always positive (more gain than loss) at the equator and always negative at the poles. In-between, it is positive during the summer when the sun is higher and the day lasts longer.When there is a high pressure, the sky is clear and there is little or no wind.......
You know, the one that was recently in America.
It made the tempture here (SC) go up to the 100's.
But now it's cooling down some which is good.

What caused this?

During daytime, the sun heats the earth. At night, that heat radiates back into space as infrared frequencies. The balance of which is called, the sun's net radiation. It is always positive (more gain than loss) at the equator and always negative at the poles. In-between, it is positive during the summer when the sun is higher and the day lasts longer.

When there is a high pressure, the sky is clear and there is little or no wind. The air is not replaced. During such a situation, the longer it lasts during the summer, the warmer it gets. It is as simple as that.

Now for the fun: I live in Norway, a country known for snow, fjords, skiing but hardly for its high temperature, right? Yet in the very north of Norway, if there is a high pressure, the temperature can increase to sometimes 35 C (95 F) simply because ... at this time of the year, north of the polar circle, the sun doesn't set at all. This is what we call, the midnight sun. And since the sun warms up all day long, the temperature can increase quite a lot. This being said, as soon as a low pressure moves in, bringing cold air from the sea, the temperature then sinks fast to perhaps 10 C or even less.

in this case the jet stream went far to the north pumping lots of hot air from the Gulf of Mexico over the continent where it heats up even more, then staying over the land mass for a time creating a prolonged heat wave
