It has nothing to do with starvation. Starving animals metabolize their muscles for energy. That is why you see skinny legs and arms. Therefore starvation does not automatically result in bloated abdomens.......
when humans starve they fill with gas and get rlly fat with skinny arms and legs but on tv when there's a starving dog its all skin and bones. so would it fill with gas eventually or would it just get bony? my question espacially applies to snakes. what happens to them when they starve?

The bloated stomach represents a form of malnutrition called kwashiorkor which is caused by protein deficiency combined with inadequate caloric consumption. Children are more vulnerable to kwashiorkor whose advanced symptoms include weight loss and muscle wasting. It is quite common to depict a thin child with a bloated stomach as starving, but in reality, such child is malnourished.
As for signs of starvation in a snake, the snake would lose weight, the spine may become visible, and lethargy will set in. A bigger danger is dehydration. If the skin around the neck is wrinkled or puckered, the snake is becoming dehydrated.

The big belly you see in many starving humans is due to fluid built-up, a symptom of hepatitis, a liver disease. It has nothing to do with starvation. Starving animals metabolize their muscles for energy. That is why you see skinny legs and arms. Therefore starvation does not automatically result in bloated abdomens.
