All living things on earth are related to one another, from the smallest bacterium to the largest whale. The question is not whether but how close. It turns out that raccoons are quite closely related to bears. Bears and raccoons are both dog-like mammals, or caniforms, meaning they are more closely related to each other than any of them are to the cat-like mammals (cats, civets, mongooses and hyaenas). Dog-like mammals and cat-like mammals are of course more closely related to each other than they are to whales, rats, elephants, rabbits, cows, horses, primates, and bats.
